On 14th January, we were asked to perform a sketch on an extract by Edward Bond, ‘Bingo’. The sketch was carried in a group of 2 or 3. It was a very interesting activity since we have not experience once.
The activity gives us the opportunity to express our own interpretation and experiment on the very short and simplest text. We can create our own setting, build up a context and even come up with our own character’s name, since there is no particular about that was mentioned in the text. We have the complete freedom to interpret and perform by our own way.
Some of my friends acted in an angry mood, some in happy tone and some make it as humor. They played as kindergarten kids, buddies, colleagues and even victims. I can also see the differentiation of the presentation which carried by 2 people and by triplet. At first, I wonder how the task is going to work by 3 people, since the first 3 to 4 couples done by duet. But then, when 3 of my partners came up, they show that the sketch can also be conducted in a larger group.
Based on this exciting activity, I think that a performance should consider a script, setting, role/character, mood, context and etc. Without this entire basis, there is impossible to carry out a play/sketch. In fact, there is not even exist.
